Though by no means a comprehensive list of all the actors to play the iconic role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, these actors give a nice overview of the various ways that Mary Shelly’s story has been interpreted for the silver screen over the years. Clive is mad, mad, MAAAAD. Cushing is crisp and controlled. Wilder is, well, wilder and funnier than any other actor to play Victor. Sting is pretty and brooding. Branagh is a bit of an over the top bombastic ham. And McEvoy, well, he does his best with a pretty bad film chock full of all the current cinema excesses of the modern day, bless him. My favorite, of course, is Gene Wilder because Young Frankenstein is hands down one of the greatest movies ever made and that film is just alchemical celluloid gold spun from so many amazing people working on a fantastic, original idea. I knew I had to find a way to work Gene Wilder in to my #drawlloween challenge month not just because the world recently lost him but because he truly contributed magic to a classic tale of science gone mad.
