October 24: Mechanical Monstrosity (feat. Maximillian)
Oh man, this red metal horror gave me the serious heebie jeebies as a kid. And Maximillian still freaks me out today. The design work on this inanimate villain is really genius from the devilish color to the blank helmet-like head. NO BUENO, Disney! This is definitely one of the big films of Disney’s dark period in the late 70s and early 80s that also gave us the tonally weird and somewhat underrated animated version of Lloyd Alexander’s The Black Cauldron, a book I adored as a kid. Barrowwights and lich kings of ancient Wales were apparently fine by my preadolescent self but I drew the line at killer robots.
